About Wendy Neefus:

When I was a child my grandparents would take my brothers and me for walks into the woods while they photographed the wildlife of the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. I have so many memories watching deer run through fields as their white tails would disappear into the distance, spying on small fox families as they played around their den and we’d spend hours calling geese from the shore of a pond.

My grandparents had a deep connection to the valley between the Berkshire and Catskill Mountains and spent their lives exploring the beautiful wildlife and capturing images that showed a deeper appreciation for the land they lived in.

My grandfather, Wendover Neefus Jr “Wendy” and my grandmother Virginia “Jinny” spent nearly 50 years running a photography studio in Hudson, NY. They photographed studio portraits, product photography, weddings, and all of the high school senior photos for generations in this small town tucked away along the Hudson River. When the workday was over they would head to the woods to photograph the wildlife throughout the changing seasons in the Hudson Valley.

These were different times; long before computers, digital cameras and cell phones. It took years to become a skilled photographer, and learn proper lighting, how to develop film and print from your negatives. The days when you had to rely on family, friends and community. There was no weather app or google maps, you had to know the land and read the weather of the season.

The Deer in the Moon photograph took many years to accomplish. Since the moon was only in the right position in early autumn each year, it took 3 years to capture the deer against the Full Moon. Wendy would bait the deer with corn on the hill and wait at night for the moment the deer would silhouette against the moon. Not only did this photograph take years, months, many late nights, a lot skill and sheer luck, but he managed to capture an iconic image that is simple and timeless. He took this photo in 1984 and there has always been a print framed on our walls in the house I grew up in and the homes of many relatives. It represents the hard work and dedication it takes to make something so minimal have such a powerful impact. This is a true example of the expression “Less is more” and when I see this image it reminds me of a simpler time, times of working for what you love.
